Market Place

  1. At first, this seems like a typical snapshot of a Walmart Superstore. The Walmart logo is the first thing I see, and the building is the main focal point of the piece. The photograph is taken on a bright, sunny day with poofy clouds in the sky. The figures walking in front of Walmart are not typical customers. Instead, they seem to be from the non-Western world and are carrying water buckets on their head. Immediately, I begin to compare the methods that are used in my society to gather goods and fulfill basic needs vs. the methods that are used in other societies and the challenges that might be faced.

I think this is really coming along nicely! I would suggest making the figure with the donkey a bit smaller so that is appears he is further in the backgound and adding a shadow (which I assume you plan to do)...Also, have you considered changing the figures standing near the front doors and transforming the cars in front of the store?

  2. I read your statement for the assignment before looking at the piece and I can definitely see the direction that you're heading. I think it conveys just about exactly what you want it to. Good juxtaposition to express your message of blind consumerism here in the states - how we buy, buy, buy unknowing of where the goods come from and how our society and culture differ from many of the other countries in the world. How money driven we are for materialistic things that we do not need. It seems like the images imported are a bold statement of how these people are doing what they're doing because that's the means by which they must live. They MUST do these things to survive: necessities. Wal-Mart is a superfluous place and these people are merely subsisting.

I think the shadows could maybe be a bit darker -- perhaps mimicking the parking lot light's shadow. It's a deeper shadow. The angles of the shadows are good and help to integrate the imported images well.

  3. I read it as a hint to outsourcing. The people depicted are normally found in countries that outsourcing is involved in so it is interesting to see these people shopping from a place that has been known to use them. It also shows where products come from, as it is not apparent to the average shopper.

The shadows are well placed but they need to darkened or lightened on some areas. The crop seems cleans and the donkey and owner still need a shadow.. My eyes are drawn from the Walmart sign to the colors around the people at the bottom. My eyes are also drawn to the dark corner beside the exit, so maybe place a person there to catch a line of sight.
